Three kinds of Hackney window

Victorian and Georgian terraces

Tall sash windows, deep reveals, and openings that have moved considerably in a hundred and fifty years. The depth is an advantage, usually plenty of room to recess-fit, and often enough for a cassette, which tidies the roll and closes the light gap at the top of a blackout blind.

The catch is squareness. On stock of this age, openings are frequently out of square by enough to matter. We measure in three places and build to the narrowest, which is why a blind ordered online to a single measurement so often will not go in. Our measuring guide explains the method if you want to check it yourself.

Warehouse and industrial conversions

Warehouse and industrial conversions are a feature of this area, and they are a genuinely different job. Steel-framed Crittall-style windows, very large panes, high ceilings and long drops. Three things follow: the blind usually mounts above the frame rather than inside it, because the frame itself offers nothing to fix to; a long drop needs a heavier tube and bottom bar than the width alone would suggest; and on a wide opening we would often split it into two or more blinds rather than fight a sagging 3 m tube.

New-build and shared ownership blocks

Around Dalston and the Hackney Wick fringe, the modern pattern applies: shallow reveals, tilt-and-turn openers and leases that restrict drilling. A face fit or a reverse roll clears the openers, and we talk through fixings against your lease at the measure.

Conservation areas

Parts of Hackney sit within conservation areas, and some properties are listed. Internal blinds are not normally affected: the controls are usually about what changes externally, and a blind inside a window is not an external alteration. That said, if your property is listed we would rather you check with the council than take our word for it, and we will fit to whatever the answer is. We never alter a window frame to make a blind fit; if the opening will not take a system, we change the system.

How it works

  1. Call or send an enquiry. Tell us roughly how many windows and which rooms.
  2. We visit and measure. Free, and we bring samples. About an hour for a typical home.
  3. You get a written quote. Itemised by window, with fitting included.
  4. The blinds are made to your sizes. We agree a fitting date with you.
  5. We fit them and clear up. Child safety devices fitted to BS EN 13120 where a chain is used.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and it is most of what we do in E8 and E9. The decision is whether the blind sits inside the reveal or on the frame, which depends on the depth available and whether the sash needs to open past it. We look at both on site.

No, but it needs specifying properly rather than ordering off a size chart. Long drops need a larger tube and a heavier bottom bar, and beyond about 2.4 m wide we would usually split the opening into two blinds so they stay light to operate and do not sag.

Internal blinds are not normally an issue, because conservation controls generally concern external alterations. If your property is listed, check with the council rather than rely on us, and we will never modify a frame to make a blind fit.

Usually yes, if the reveal is deep enough. Tell us about the pole, track or shutter position at the measure so we can check the blind clears it through its full travel.

Yes, and in period properties with varied window sizes that is worth planning deliberately: a common fabric and a matched bracket depth makes wildly different openings read as one scheme.

Yes. For let properties we specify durable wipeable fabrics, and where the building requires it we can supply flame-retardant fabric certified to BS 5867-2. See commercial roller blinds.
