Terrace bays, and why they are never identical
East Ham is characterised by long Victorian and Edwardian terraces put up for workers at the docks and the railway, most with a front bay and a square rear window. From the pavement the houses look interchangeable. Inside the openings are not.
Two reasons. The terraces were built by different small builders plot by plot, so the "standard" varied street to street. And more importantly, almost every one has had replacement windows fitted at some point in the last forty years, by different installers, to different specifications. Neighbouring houses in the same terrace can therefore have openings that no longer match each other.
So a bay gets one blind per pane, each measured individually across three points, and all set to a common height so the line runs level across the window. Our bay window guide explains why a single blind cannot follow a bay's angles.
What this means for your budget
A terrace with a front bay needs more blinds than the window count suggests, because the bay counts as three on its own. That is worth knowing before you compare a per-window price against a whole-house figure: our price estimator lets you work it out per room.
Houses in multiple occupation and let property
East Ham has a high proportion of shared houses and rented property, and landlord work is a large part of what we do here. Two points that come up every time:
- Specify for durability, not for looks. A wipeable fabric and a robust chain mechanism will outlast a delicate finish across several tenancies and costs less over time.
- Fire safety in an HMO. Where the property is licensed as an HMO, the fabric may need to be certified flame-retardant to BS 5867-2. We supply the certificate with the order. See commercial and fire-retardant blinds.

Child safety
Family housing means cots and beds near windows. Every blind we fit with a chain gets the safety device required by BS EN 13120, fitted at the correct height. In a child's bedroom we would suggest going cordless instead, which removes the hazard rather than managing it.

Frequently asked questions
We would rather not. These terraces were built plot by plot and many have had replacement windows since, so neighbouring openings do not necessarily match. Measuring costs you nothing and it is the difference between a blind that fits and one that does not.
