River light is a real design problem
A room facing the Thames gets light off the water as well as out of the sky, and it arrives low in the morning and evening rather than from overhead. The practical effect is glare at eye level, at exactly the times of day you are most likely to be in the room, which is why standard curtains and Venetians tend to disappoint on this stretch.
A sunscreen fabric handles this better than anything else we fit. It cuts the glare while leaving the river visible through the weave, which is usually the whole reason the flat was bought. A blackout blind in that room solves the glare by removing the view, which is not really solving it.

A sunscreen or solar fabric. The openness factor decides the trade-off: around 1 to 3% is darker and cuts more glare, 5 to 10% keeps more of the view. For a riverside room we usually suggest something in the middle and show you samples against your own window before deciding.
Sunscreen fabric gives daytime privacy but reverses after dark with the lights on: people outside can see in. For a room used at night, either a day and night blind or two blinds on the same window, sunscreen and blackout, is the honest answer.
