Roller Blinds in Canning Town

Made-to-measure roller blinds across Canning Town, Royal Docks and Custom House. Mostly new-build, which means shallow reveals, tilt-and-turn windows and a lot of glass facing the water.

Regeneration housing has a pattern

Much of the housing in the Royal Docks regeneration area is recent, and some of it is still being completed. That gives a consistent set of conditions, and knowing them in advance is most of the job.

Reveal depth is the first question

Modern construction sets the window close to the outer face of the wall, so there is often less than the roughly 70 mm a standard roller needs to sit fully inside the opening. Where that is the case the blind goes on the face above the window instead. That is not a compromise, on a plain square modern opening a face fit usually looks more deliberate than a recessed one, and it blocks more light.

Water light is brighter than you expect

Flats facing the docks get light off the water as well as out of the sky, arriving low in the morning and evening. It is the same effect we deal with along the Thames, and the answer is the same: a sunscreen fabric cuts the glare while keeping the dock view that the flat was bought for. Blackout removes the glare by removing the view.

Leases and fixings

Most blocks here are leasehold with a managing agent, and fixing restrictions are common. Check what your lease allows before we visit, and we will talk through the fixing options at the measure so you can clear them with your managing agent.

New-build warranties

If you are inside a developer warranty period, check what it says about fixings and tell us at the measure. We will show you where each bracket would go before anything is drilled.

The older pockets

Canning Town is not all new. There are surviving terraces and post-war blocks around Custom House and the older streets, where the usual rules apply: measure in three places, expect the openings to be out of square, and treat replacement windows as unknown sizes rather than standard ones.

Timing a new-build fit-out

If the flat is not finished, the right moment to measure is after the windows are in and the reveals are plastered and finished, not before. Sills, plastering and trim all change the opening, and measuring early is the most reliable way to end up with a blind that is 8 mm too wide.

How it works

  1. Call or send an enquiry. Tell us roughly how many windows and which rooms.
  2. We visit and measure. Free, and we bring samples. About an hour for a typical home.
  3. You get a written quote. Itemised by window, with fitting included.
  4. The blinds are made to your sizes. We agree a fitting date with you.
  5. We fit them and clear up. Child safety devices fitted to BS EN 13120 where a chain is used.

Frequently asked questions

A face fit above the opening, overlapping the window on all sides. It blocks more light than a recess fit and on a plain modern opening it generally looks better. Very common across E16.

Check exactly what your lease or managing agent allows before we visit. At the measure we will show you where each bracket would go, so you can check it against your lease before you order.

A sunscreen fabric. Light off the water is low and bright, and sunscreen cuts the glare while keeping the view. For bedrooms, add blackout: dock lighting carries on all night.

After the windows are installed and the reveals are plastered and finished. Anything earlier and the opening will still change. Tell us what stage the property is at and we will advise.

Yes. For lets we specify durable wipeable fabrics and robust mechanisms rather than delicate finishes, and we can quote several flats together.

Yes, along with Royal Victoria, Royal Albert and Custom House: all of E16.
