Between Chafford Hundred, West Thurrock and the continuing development along the riverside, a very large share of the housing here was built from the 1990s onwards. That changes the blind job in specific ways.
Shallow reveals
Modern construction tends to bring the window closer to the outer face of the wall, which leaves less depth inside for a blind to recess into. Below roughly 70 mm there is not enough room for a standard roller to sit fully inside, and the blind will protrude. In that case a face fit above the opening is the better answer: it looks intentional, and it covers more of the window.
Standardised sizes that are not quite standard
Estate housing is built to repeating types, which tempts people towards ready made blinds. The catch is that the openings are standard to the developer's specification, not to the sizes the ready made market is cut to. A window that is 1,180 mm sits awkwardly between a 1,200 mm and a 900 mm stock blind, and trimming it is where the trouble starts. See made to measure vs ready made.
Solar gain on modern glazing
Large windows and good insulation mean a south-facing new-build room heats up fast and stays hot. A sunscreen fabric reflects the energy before it enters; a blackout blind mostly absorbs it and radiates it back into the room. If your complaint is heat rather than light, that distinction matters.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, the blind is face fitted to the wall or frame above the opening instead, overlapping the window on all sides. It blocks more light than a recess fit and hides a shallow or uneven reveal. Very common on newer Thurrock housing.
We would rather measure. Developer types repeat, but individual openings vary by a few millimetres and replacement units vary by more. It costs you nothing for us to check, and it is the difference between a blind that fits and one that does not.
A solar or sunscreen fabric with a low openness factor, because it reflects solar energy rather than absorbing it, and it keeps the view. Blackout is for darkness, not for heat.
