Classic 1930s suburbia, with one complication

Bexleyheath was largely built out between the wars along the railway, and the housing is remarkably consistent: bay-fronted semis, square rear windows, and a first-floor window above the bay. From a blind point of view that is good news: we know what we are walking into.

The complication is what has happened since. Windows have been replaced, often twice, and quite a lot of 1930s bays have been rebuilt or simplified in the process. A bay that was originally three panes with leaded top lights may now be a single wide unit, or three panes of different proportions to the originals. So while the houses look identical from the pavement, the openings inside frequently are not, even between two halves of the same pair.

Which is why we measure every pane. A bay takes one blind per pane, each sized to its own opening and all set to a common height. The bay window guide covers the method.

Leaded and top-light windows

Where original leaded top lights survive above the main panes, you have a choice: run the blind across the whole opening including the top lights, or stop below them and keep the leaded glass visible. Most people keep the top lights showing, because they are the feature the house was built with. It does mean a little more light enters at the top, which matters in a bedroom and rarely anywhere else.

Rear extensions and kitchen-diners

A lot of the rear extensions here have roof lights or a glazed section that turns a kitchen into a greenhouse by mid-afternoon. Roof light blinds need side channels so the fabric stays against the glass rather than hanging away from it, and in a kitchen the fabric wants to be wipeable, not a standard polyester.

Bungalows and retirement housing around Crook Log and Upton

Reach and grip matter more than child safety here. Cordless and motorised operation is worth looking at properly rather than dismissing as a gadget: we will show you both at the measure.

How it works

  1. Call or send an enquiry. Tell us roughly how many windows and which rooms.
  2. We visit and measure. Free, and we bring samples. About an hour for a typical house.
  3. You get a written quote. Itemised by window, with fitting included.
  4. The blinds are made to your sizes. We agree a fitting date with you.
  5. We fit them and clear up. Child safety devices fitted to BS EN 13120 where a chain is used.

Happy with the fly screen installed in one of my bedrooms. It looks very sleek, and I’m very pleased with the installation, communication, and the product itself.

Frequently asked questions

Your choice. Most people stop the blind below them so the leaded glass stays visible, which is usually the nicest-looking answer in these houses. In a bedroom, where you want the room dark, covering them is the better call.

We would rather not. These houses were built to matching plans but the windows have been replaced at different times by different installers, and bays in particular have often been rebuilt to different proportions. Measuring costs you nothing.

Yes. A roof light needs side channels so the fabric stays held against the glass: without them it hangs away and looks wrong. If it is a Velux, the type code on the frame gives us the size directly.

Yes, along with Barnehurst, Northumberland Heath, Upton and Crook Log. Measuring and quoting are free across DA6 and DA7 and the neighbouring roads.

A wipeable moisture-resistant fabric rather than a standard polyester. Steam and airborne grease build into a film on ordinary fabric that is very difficult to shift. See kitchen blinds.

Spring-operated cordless blinds cost little more than a chain system. Motorised blinds start from around £180 and are worth it for high windows, long runs, or where reaching and gripping a chain is difficult. See cordless and motorised.
