Ilford's big windows
Redbridge has some of the largest and best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian housing stock in this part of London: tall sash windows, deep reveals and wide bays, particularly around Cranbrook, Valentines and the roads off Eastern Avenue. That brings two things worth knowing before you order anything.
Bays are almost never symmetrical
A five-pane Edwardian bay typically has a wide centre, two narrower flanks and two narrower returns again, and the two sides are rarely the same as each other by the time a century of settlement has done its work. Each pane is measured separately and gets its own blind, so they meet cleanly at the corners and all sit at the same height. One wide blind across a bay does not work: it cannot follow the angles. The bay window guide explains the approach in full.
Tall windows need a heavier specification
A 2.2 m drop is common in these houses. Long drops put more weight on the mechanism and more fabric on the tube, so the tube diameter and the bottom bar both need to step up. This is the sort of thing a stock blind simply cannot accommodate, and it is why a long-drop blind costs more than the width alone would suggest.
Period features and how the blind sits
Original sashes, deep architraves and decorative beading all affect where the brackets can go. Deep reveals are an advantage, usually plenty of room for a recess fit, and often room for a cassette, which tidies the roll and closes the light gap at the top on a blackout blind.
Conversions, HMOs and landlord work
Ilford has a large number of converted flats and shared houses, and we do a lot of landlord work here. Two points that come up every time:
- Durability matters more than looks. In a let property a wipeable fabric and a robust chain mechanism will outlast a delicate finish, and cost less over the tenancy.
- Fire safety. In an HMO or a converted block, the fabric may need to be certified flame-retardant to BS 5867-2. We can supply the certification with the order. See commercial and fire-retardant blinds.
For multiple properties we will quote the whole portfolio in one go and phase the fitting around tenancies.

Frequently asked questions
One per pane. A three-pane bay takes three blinds, a five-pane bay takes five. Each is measured individually because the panes and the returns are rarely equal, and they are set to a common height so the line across the bay stays level.
Yes. The usual question is whether the blind sits inside the reveal or on the frame, and that depends on the depth available and whether the sash needs to open past it. We will look at both at the measure.
Long drops are not a problem but they need a larger tube and a heavier bottom bar, which affects the price. We spec that at the measure rather than leaving it to chance: an under-specified long blind sags and rolls unevenly.
Yes, across multiple properties, with flame-retardant fabrics certified to BS 5867-2 where the building requires them and fitting phased around tenancy changes.
Usually, yes: a recess-fit roller sits well inside the curtain line. Tell us the pole or track position at the measure so we can check the blind clears it.
Yes, all of IG1 to IG6, including Gants Hill, Barkingside, Clayhall, Newbury Park, Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Hainault.
