What we fit most in Hornchurch

Conservatories and garden rooms

Conservatories and rear extensions are common in suburban housing of this kind, and they raise a specific problem. The problem is usually the same: unusable in July, cold in January. Side elevations take standard rollers; the roof needs a tensioned system because gravity pulls ordinary fabric away from the glass. A solar fabric on the roof does far more for summer heat than a blackout blind would, because it reflects the energy before it enters the room. Full detail on the conservatory blinds page.

Emerson Park

Larger detached houses, often with substantial glazing, multiple aspects and windows at heights that are awkward to reach. This is where motorised blinds earn their money, not as a gadget, but because a high landing window or a run of eight blinds across a rear elevation is genuinely tedious to operate by hand. Battery tube motors need no wiring and recharge two or three times a year.

1930s semis around Elm Park and Station Lane

The standard Havering pattern: a front bay, square rear windows, and reveals that have moved since 1935. Individual blinds per bay pane, measured in three places each. Elm Park's stock in particular tends to have shallower reveals than Hornchurch proper, so face fitting is more often the right answer there.

Flats and bungalows

Hornchurch has a good deal of purpose-built sheltered and retirement housing. Cordless and motorised operation matters more here than anywhere else we work, not for child safety but for reach and grip. We will always show you both when we visit.

The conservatory question, answered honestly

People ask us whether blinds will make a conservatory usable year-round. The honest answer is that they make a large difference in summer and a modest one in winter.

Summer

A reflective solar fabric across the roof stops a lot of the heat before it gets in. This is the single most effective thing you can do short of replacing the roof.

Winter

Blinds reduce heat loss through the glass, but glass is glass. If the conservatory is unheated it will still be cold. Blinds help; they do not turn it into a living room.

We would rather tell you that before you spend the money than after.

How it works

  1. Call or send an enquiry. Tell us roughly how many windows and which rooms.
  2. We visit and measure. Free, and we bring samples. About an hour for a typical house.
  3. You get a written quote. Itemised by window, with fitting included.
  4. The blinds are made to your sizes. We agree a fitting date with you.
  5. We fit them and clear up. Child safety devices fitted to BS EN 13120 where a chain is used.

Happy with the fly screen installed in one of my bedrooms. It looks very sleek, and I’m very pleased with the installation, communication, and the product itself.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Roof panels need a tensioned system with the fabric held between rails, and every panel is measured individually because conservatory roofs are rarely symmetrical. It is not a job we would recommend measuring yourself.

They will make a substantial difference, particularly a reflective solar fabric on the roof, but they will not make a west-facing glass room the same temperature as the house in August. Expect a big improvement, not a transformation.

For high or hard-to-reach windows, a long run of blinds you would otherwise operate one at a time, or anyone with limited reach or grip: yes. For a single bedroom window, probably not. See motorised roller blinds.

Not necessarily. Battery tube motors charge by USB and need no electrical work, which is why they suit retrofits. Hard-wired motors are electrical work and we would arrange that separately.

Yes. We bring our own access equipment and will suggest cordless or motorised operation where reaching a chain would be awkward.

We give you a fitting date at the measure. Conservatory roof systems take longer because they are built to more complex shapes.
