How to Clean Roller Blinds
Lower the blind fully, vacuum both sides with a soft brush attachment, then spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Leave it down until it is completely dry. Do not put a roller blind in a washing machine or a bath.
- Works for blackout, sunscreen, thermal and PVC fabrics
- Ten minutes a blind, twice a year
- Guidance on what will ruin the coating, not just what cleans it

The one rule that matters: roller blind fabric is not cloth. It is polyester with a coating bonded to one face: the coating is what makes a blackout blind black out and a PVC blind wipeable. Soaking, scrubbing or machine-washing separates the coating from the backing, and once it has separated nothing brings it back. Every instruction below exists to protect that layer.
The routine clean: every few months
- Lower the blind fully so the whole face is exposed and flat.
- Vacuum it with a soft upholstery or brush attachment on low suction, working top to bottom in overlapping strokes. Do the back as well: that side faces the glass and collects more than you would expect.
- Wipe the bottom bar and the brackets with a dry cloth. Dust settles on the bar and transfers back onto the fabric every time the blind rolls up.
- Run the blind up and down twice to shed anything loosened.
Twice a year is enough in a bedroom or a living room. In a kitchen, make it quarterly.
Spot-cleaning a mark
- Test somewhere hidden first: the bottom 50 mm that sits behind the bar, or the very top that never unrolls. Wait for it to dry and check for a water mark before you touch the visible face.
- Mix a weak solution of warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Weak means barely cloudy.
- Use a microfibre cloth wrung out until it is barely damp, not wet. You should not be able to squeeze a drop out of it.
- Dab, do not scrub. Work from the outside of the mark inwards so you do not spread it into a halo. Circular scrubbing is what lifts the coating.
- Wipe over with a second cloth dampened with clean water to lift the soap residue, which otherwise dries as a visible ring.
- Leave the blind fully down until bone dry. Rolling up a damp blind is the most common cause of mildew spotting, and those spots do not come out.

Never do these
Machine wash it
The single fastest way to destroy a roller blind. The drum creases the coating permanently and the fabric will never roll flat again.
Soak it in the bath
Widely suggested online, and it ruins blackout and thermal fabrics. Prolonged water contact delaminates the coating.
Use bleach or solvents
Bleach, white spirit, acetone and nail varnish remover all attack the coating and most will discolour the fabric on contact.
Steam clean it
Heat plus moisture is the exact combination that separates a laminated fabric.
Scrub with anything abrasive
Magic erasers, scouring pads and stiff brushes all abrade the surface. The mark goes and takes the finish with it.
Roll it up damp
Trapped moisture between layers of coated fabric produces mildew spotting within days.
By fabric type
| Fabric | Routine care | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Blackout | Vacuum both sides; damp-dab marks only | The blackout coating is the most delicate layer on any roller blind. Minimum moisture, no rubbing. |
| Sunscreen / solar | Vacuum; the open weave sheds dust easily | Dust lodges in the perforations. Vacuum rather than wipe, or you push it further in. |
| Thermal | Vacuum; damp-dab the face only | The metallised backing marks permanently if wiped. Clean the room side only. |
| PVC / moisture resistant | Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap | The most forgiving fabric there is, but still no solvents. |
| Day and night | Vacuum on very low suction with the stripes aligned open | The two layers can snag. Never pull the fabric taut to clean it. |
| Flame retardant | Vacuum and damp-dab | Harsh cleaners can compromise the FR treatment and with it the BS 5867-2 certification. |
Specific problems
Mould or mildew spots
Almost always a bathroom or a kitchen blind that has been rolled up wet, or a window with condensation running onto the fabric. Treat the room first, extract properly, wipe the condensation off the glass, because the spots will return otherwise. On the fabric, dab with a weak solution of warm water and a little white vinegar, test it somewhere hidden first, and dry the blind fully down. Established mould that has grown into the coating cannot be removed; the blind needs replacing. A moisture-resistant PVC blind is the answer in a shower room.
Kitchen grease
Airborne grease from a hob builds into a film that traps dust. Warm water with a little washing-up liquid on a barely damp cloth, dabbed, works on a wipeable fabric. On a standard polyester it is very difficult to shift, which is exactly why we recommend a wipeable fabric above a hob. See kitchen blinds.
Pet hair and dust build-up
Vacuum first, then a lint roller for whatever is left. Do not use sticky tape: it lifts the coating.
Nicotine or smoke staining
This penetrates the fabric rather than sitting on it. Cleaning will lighten it at best. If the blind has yellowed through, replacement is the honest answer.
Crayon, ink or food
Act quickly, dab with a barely damp cloth, and work inwards. Do not reach for a solvent: it will take the coating off and leave a shiny patch that is more obvious than the mark was.
Cleaning the mechanism, not just the fabric
Most "faulty" blinds we are called out to are dirty, not broken.
The chain and clutch
Wipe the chain with a damp cloth: hand grease on a plastic chain is what makes it slip on the sprocket. Never oil the clutch. It runs on friction, and oil is precisely what stops it holding the blind up.
The brackets and the tube ends
Dust packs into the bracket recesses and makes the blind stiff. Unclip the blind twice a year, wipe both brackets and the tube end caps with a dry cloth, and clip it back. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a blind that runs sweetly at ten years and one that does not.
On a motorised blind, keep the motor end dry entirely and wipe the housing with a dry cloth only. Battery tube motors should be charged or replaced on the schedule in the manual rather than run flat.
How to make them need cleaning less often
- Vacuum before dirt becomes a mark. Dust that sits on coated fabric through a summer bonds to it.
- Deal with condensation. A blind that touches wet glass every winter morning will spot. Move it forward in the recess, or face fit it.
- Choose the fabric for the room. A wipeable PVC in a bathroom or above a hob will still look right in five years. A standard polyester will not.
- Keep the blind down while it dries after any clean, and after washing the windows.
- Use the chain, not the fabric. Pulling a blind down by its face is how hand marks appear across the bottom third.
If you are choosing fabrics now rather than cleaning existing blinds, order free samples and put the candidates up against the actual window before you decide.

Frequently asked questions
No. Roller blind fabric is coated polyester, not cloth, and the drum creases the coating permanently. The blind will never roll flat again. Vacuum and spot-clean instead.
It is suggested a lot online and we would advise against it on any coated fabric: blackout and thermal especially. Prolonged water contact delaminates the coating, and the blind usually comes out looking worse than it went in. A wipeable PVC blind will survive it, but it does not need it.
Vacuum every three to six months in a bedroom or living room, quarterly in a kitchen or bathroom. Spot-clean marks as they happen rather than letting them set.
Vacuuming will not. Scrubbing, soaking, steam and solvents all will, and the damage shows up as pinholes of light. Dab with a barely damp cloth and nothing stronger.
Dab with warm water and a little white vinegar, having tested a hidden area first, and dry the blind fully in the down position. If the mould has grown into the coating it cannot be removed. Fix the underlying condensation or the spots come back, and consider a moisture-resistant fabric next time.
When the coating has lifted or bubbled, when mould has grown into the fabric, when there is through-body yellowing from smoke, or when the fabric has frayed at a cut edge. At that point cleaning makes it worse. Our cost guide sets out what a replacement runs to.
