The best roller blinds for bathrooms

A bathroom blind has to do two things that pull against each other: give you privacy day and night, and survive being steamed twice a day for years. The fabrics that do the first job well are often the ones that fail the second.

The short answer. A moisture-resistant or PVC-coated dim-out or blackout-weight fabric, on an aluminium bottom bar with a plastic or stainless chain. Not sunscreen, it is not private enough after dark. Not a standard uncoated fabric, it will warp and spot within a couple of years.

Privacy first, and why sunscreen fails here

A bathroom needs a fabric nobody can see shapes through, at any hour. That rules out sunscreen fabrics immediately, and this is the mistake we are called out to correct most often in bathrooms.

Sunscreen works by letting light through the weave. During the day it is brighter outside, so you see out and nobody sees in, which is how people convince themselves it will be fine. After dark with the light on, the room becomes the bright side and the effect reverses completely. In a bathroom that is not a minor inconvenience.

What you want instead is a dim-out or blackout-weight fabric. Dim-out gives complete privacy while letting a soft glow through, so the room does not feel like a cupboard during the day. Full blackout also works and is worth it if the bathroom doubles as somewhere you want dark.

Then the steam, which is what kills ordinary blinds

This is the part product pages skip. Put a standard uncoated polyester blind in a family bathroom and here is what happens over two or three years:

  • The fabric absorbs humidity and dries unevenly, so the edges ripple and the blind stops rolling flat.
  • Black spotting appears along the bottom, where the fabric stays damp longest. In an uncoated weave it does not come out.
  • A steel bottom bar rusts, and the rust bleeds upward into the fabric as brown marks.
  • The mechanism stiffens as pins and brackets corrode in humid air.

Only the first two are about fabric. The other two are about components, which is why the specification matters as much as the swatch.

What to specify

BathroomFabricWhy
Cloakroom or WCMoisture-resistant dim-outLittle steam. Privacy is the main requirement and you get a wider choice of colours.
Family bathroomPVC-coated dim-out or blackoutDaily showers. A coated surface wipes clean and will not take on moisture.
Window near the bath or showerSolid PVC or vinylDirect splashing. Also consider fitting outside the recess so the blind sits clear of the wettest zone.
Wet room or shower roomSolid PVC throughoutThe genuine extreme. Sometimes obscured glass is the better answer, and we will say so.

Full detail on the fabric grades is on our waterproof roller blinds page.

Ask what the bottom bar is made of. Aluminium does not rust; steel does, and in a bathroom it eventually will. On a bathroom blind this single component does more for lifespan than upgrading the fabric. It is also the thing cheap quotes quietly leave as steel.

Ventilation, honestly

No blind fixes a badly ventilated bathroom. If the extractor is weak or the window never opens, moisture has to settle somewhere, and it will choose the coldest surface in the room. A coated blind will not grow mould the way an uncoated one does, but the frame, the sill, the grout and the ceiling still will.

The routine is about ten seconds a day:

  • Run the fan or open the window for a few minutes after a shower.
  • Raise the blind during the day so the glass and fabric dry properly.
  • Wipe the sill if water has pooled overnight.

We would rather say this now than be called out in eighteen months to look at a blind that is doing its job in a room that is not.

Where the window sits

Above the bath

Common in older terraces, and the wettest position in the room. Solid PVC fabric, and consider fitting outside the recess so the blind sits clear of direct splashing. If reaching it means standing in the bath, that is a strong case for motorising.

Beside the basin

The easiest case. Splashes are occasional and a coated dim-out fabric handles it comfortably.

Inside a shower enclosure

Be careful here. No roller blind is designed to be soaked and left wet. If the window is genuinely inside the enclosure, obscured glass or a fixed screen is usually the right answer and we will tell you that rather than sell you a blind that will not last.

A roof window in the bathroom

Warm moist air rises straight to the coldest glass in the house, so condensation collects here worse than anywhere. A channelled roof blind in a coated fabric, plus using the window's vent position, is the combination that works.

Small details that make a difference

Fitting outside the recess

Often better in a bathroom than in any other room. It keeps the blind away from the wettest part of the reveal, improves privacy at the edges, and makes the blind easier to wipe.

The chain

Plastic or stainless, never plain metal. A metal chain in humid air marks, and over time stains the fabric it rests against.

Cassettes

Worth considering. A cassette keeps steam off the mechanism at the top of the blind, which is where the moving parts are.

Child safety

Bathrooms often have a bath, a laundry basket or a stool beside the window: all climbable. Standard safety devices apply, and in a family bathroom cordless is worth considering for the same reasons as a nursery.

Cleaning

The advantage of a coated fabric is that this is genuinely easy. Wipe with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, go over it again with a clean damp cloth, then leave the blind down until it is completely dry before rolling it up. No bleach and nothing abrasive: both attack the coating, and without the coating you are left with ordinary polyester in a wet room.

Wipe the bottom bar occasionally too. It is where water collects and the first place marks show.

Our usual bathroom specification

What we fit most often

A PVC-coated dim-out fabric, aluminium bottom bar, plastic chain, fitted outside the recess where the reveal allows it. Solid PVC if the window is within splashing distance of the bath or shower.

We will ask where the window sits relative to the water before specifying, because a cloakroom and a family bathroom are genuinely different jobs.

Common questions

Bathroom blinds, answered

A moisture-resistant or PVC-coated dim-out fabric, on an aluminium bottom bar with a plastic or stainless chain. That combination gives privacy day and night and survives daily steam.

For a window close to the bath or shower, step up to a solid PVC fabric.

We would strongly advise against it. Sunscreen fabric works by letting light through, so once the bathroom light is on and it is dark outside, it shows far more than people expect.

It is the single most common bathroom blind mistake we are called out to correct.

In a cloakroom with a good extractor, often for years. In a family bathroom with daily showers, usually not.

What happens is the fabric takes on moisture and stops hanging flat, black spotting appears along the bottom, and a steel bottom bar rusts and marks the fabric. The premium for a coated fabric is far less than replacing it.

A coated fabric will not grow mould the way an uncoated weave does, because there is no absorbent surface for it to settle into and it wipes clean.

The rest is ventilation: run the fan after a shower and raise the blind during the day so the glass and fabric dry. No blind can compensate for a bathroom that never airs.

Yes, in a solid PVC fabric, ideally fitted outside the recess so it sits clear of direct splashing.

If reaching it means standing in the bath, motorising is worth considering. If the window is actually inside a shower enclosure, a blind is probably the wrong product and we will tell you so.

Dim-out for most people. It gives complete privacy while letting a soft glow through, so the room does not feel closed in during the day.

Blackout is worth it if the bathroom is somewhere you want genuinely dark, or if it is overlooked closely and you want no glow at all from outside.
